Why timber?

Are you looking to replace windows or doors, or wanting to build a garden room to extend your living space? You may be weighing up the pros and cons of UPVC versus Timber. It goes without saying that we would 100% recommend a natural material over plastic any day, and here is why.

Sustainability
The embodied energy of timber is very low, that is, it does not take much energy to transform timber from its sawn state to a building material. Timber is renewable, recyclable, and easy to repurpose. We only source timber from sustainable and managed forest. In addition, wood is a brilliant natural insulator, and with high and rising fuel costs, keeping a house warm with thermally efficient doors and windows is a must.

Flexibility of design
At A R Manley and Son Ltd, every single piece of joinery we manufacture is bespoke. Timber allows us to make whatever we want to any shape or size. This also means we can use a variety of ironmongery, glass (including the most energy efficient double glazed options), and finishes, including top quality exterior grade paints, stains and oils. We can match current or create completely new designs, and specialise in manufacturing and fitting joinery that is in keeping with the period of the property. Looking for modern and chic? No problem, we can meet any design requirement.

Longevity
Timber will last as long as it is maintained and cared for. UPVC doesn’t last forever, contrary to common belief, due to sun and weather exposure. Although some timbers are more vulnerable, joinery can be repaired and looked after, by any homeowner. Redecorating based on manufacture’s recommendations, and regular maintenance, can lead to timber lasting a lifetime.

Property value
There is nothing worse than seeing a beautiful period property that has been cheapened by unsightly plastic windows detracting from its character. Timber is timeless and elegant, and can be manipulated to match and compliment any age of house. Bespoke curves, intricate mouldings, and period panelling, are all possible with timber options. The right material can send the value of your property soaring.
