A R Manley and Son Ltd shortlisted for national woodworking award

This year’s shortlist for the prestigious British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Awards has been revealed. The Awards celebrate the outstanding skills, talent and achievements of the UK woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry.

There are seven award categories, including the BWF Heritage Project of the Year Award, sponsored by Remmers (UK) Ltd., for which A R Manley has been shortlisted!

A R Manley has a proud history of renovation and heritage work, so it is an honour to be recognised for this important aspect of our business. The original features within a home or building narrate its history, and preserving this narrative is crucial during your tenure. A R Manley has a team of highly skilled craftsmen, adept and passionate about restoring, renovating, and repairing historic joinery. With extensive knowledge of listed buildings, our services come highly recommended by local councils and heritage groups.

Although a number of our projects from the past year have been acknowledged, it was the use of traditional techniques to accurately replicate an authentic Victorian greenhouse that won us a place at the final.

The final product

The greenhouse was a glass roofed, timber structure, with its original mechanical roof vent openers and window stays and braces. Our brief was to replace it like-for-like, and manufacture it as close to the original as physically possible. Every joint, every section was made to match the original. Our measurements had to be absolutely accurate, especially with the different angles, as the slightest discrepancy would make a big difference to the overall structure. It was a huge project, with a lot of planning, measuring and man hours to make it a success.

All timber was Accoya, a durable and sustainable treated softwood, that is guaranteed for fifty years. You can read more about Accoya products here - Accoya Wood: Modified wood, Long life treated wood, Sustainable wood

All new ironmongery was polished brass, and the old light-opening mechanisms were refurbished and re-painted in a heritage colour. The whole structure was factory finished, then touched up on site. We also produced and installed solid Accoya wall panelling and window boards, finished to match the rest of the woodwork.

Before and after

The winners will be announced at the BWF Annual Awards Ceremony at The Langham Hotel in London, on Friday 22 November.
